Renovation projects provide a unique opportunity to revive the glory of historic buildings, preserving their rich history for future generations. One such remarkable project is the renovation of the Lemon Street School in Marietta. It is with great pride that we highlight Knox Enterprise’s significant contribution as one of the contractors involved in this extraordinary endeavor. What makes this project even more special is that Knox Enterprise’s own founder, William Knox II, attended Lemon Street High School in the 1960s. After over 50 years, he returned as a contractor to restore the very building that holds precious memories from his youth.
Lemon Street Grammar School served as a beacon of education for Black students in Cobb County during the Jim Crow Era. Thanks to the visionary initiative of Marietta City Schools Superintendent Dr. Grant Rivera, the historic building has been successfully repurposed, breathing new life into a vital part of Marietta’s Black community history.
During the renovation project, Knox had the honor of meeting former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes. Governor Barnes, a prominent figure in Georgia’s political landscape, recognized the significance of the Lemon Street School and commended Knox Enterprise for their dedicated efforts to restore this important testament to Marietta’s Black community.
With the renovation complete, the Lemon Street School has found new purpose as the Marietta City Schools Performing Learning Center. This innovative program utilizes a computer-based learning format, accommodating students in the Marietta Alternative Program for grades 6 through 12. Furthermore, the Marietta Evening School Hours offer night classes for students who work full-time jobs, ensuring accessibility to education for everyone.
As we reflect on the incredible journey of the Lemon Street School renovation project, we are reminded of the importance of preserving our history and paying homage to the pioneers who fought for educational equality. Knox Enterprise is humbled to have contributed to this transformational restoration effort, breathing new life into Lemon Street’s halls. Each step taken has not only revitalized a prominent historical landmark but instilled hope and inspiration in the hearts of future generations.
